Hull FC 18 Leeds Rhinos 6

31st May 2013

By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos lost out to Hull FC at the KC Stadium having trailed 18-0 at half time and only had a Brett Delaney second half try to show for their efforts.

Leeds welcomed back Brett Delaney into the second row with Liam Sutcliffe starting on the bench otherwise the Rhinos were unchanged, with Mitch Achurch the player to miss out from the side that lost at Etihad Stadium against Wigan five days earlier.

The two teams came into the game in contrasting form. Hull FC secured a controversial victory over neighbours Hull KR at the Magic Weekend whilst Leeds lost out to Wigan due to another contentious decision.

And it was the home side who started the more confident and opened the scoring after just three minutes when Shannon McDonnell opened up the Leeds defence and fed the ball inside which eventually found Joe Westerman and the former Castleford man crossed for the opening try. Daniel Holdsworth kicked the conversion and added a penalty after ten minutes to extend his side’s early advantage.

Hull dominated the possession and territory but Leeds were able to match them on defence with some crucial tackles coming from Zak Hardaker and Joel Moon however they were hit with a sucker punch when a dangerous looking kick from Kevin Sinfield towards Ryan Hall was plucked out of the air by Tom Lineham. The Hull FC winger then raced up field before passing back inside for Ben Crooks to score. Holdsworth missed the conversion attempt so it remained 12-0 after as many minutes.

The night got worse for Leeds with their first meaningful attack on the Hull FC line as Kallum Watkins burst through the defence but then went down injured on a patch of the field that had had a squash court on it in the weeks leading up to the game. He had to be helped from the field and played no further part in the game.

Hull were denied a third try when Kirk Yeaman was adjudged to knock on as he attempted to ground a kick in the corner. However, the home side did increase their lead with virtually the last play of the half when Danny Houghton darted over from dummy half. Holdsworth had no trouble with the conversion this time to make it 18-0 at the interval.

The second half was a dogged affair with both teams conceding a lot of penalties in the game, particularly around the ruck area. Leeds’ defensive line held firm against a wave of pressure from Hull FC but there were dealt another injury blow when Danny McGuire was helped from the field after suffering a leg injury.

With one of their first choice half backs out, this was a great opportunity for young Liam Sutcliffe to show his potential and he did just that, bursting clear, dummying to kick before putting Brett Delaney, playing in the centre in place of Watkins, away for the try. Sinfield added the touchline conversion to make it 18-6 with just under a quarter of the game to go.

Joel Moon was held up over the line for the Rhinos with ten minutes to go before former Rhino Jay Pitts missed a certain try scoring chance when he knocked on Yeaman’s desperate offload after Hardaker had done well to track the centre into the corner.

Leeds continued to battle hard but they had left themselves too much to do with their disappointing first half showing and will now have to assess the damage down in terms of injuries before next Friday’s home clash with Daryl Powell’s Castleford side.
