Hull FC 16 Leeds Rhinos 12

20th May 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos were denied a late win at the KC Stadium as the home side produced a remarkable rear guard action to hold on for the victory.

Both sets of forwards set a solid platform at the start of the game with some determined defence on display but it was Hull who took the lead with a penalty after ten minutes. Three Leeds players were ruled offside in front of their own posts but Danny Tickle's effort appeared to go wide but was given by both touch judges.

Hull increased their lead after 15 minutes when Matt Sing was quickest to react to a bouncing pass but appeared to lose control as he tried to ground it. However, referee Ian Smith consulted with his touch judge and in goal judge, who were both in close attendance and gave the try. Tickle added an excellent touchline conversion to make it 8-0.

The Rhinos hit back six minutes later with a well worked move on the last tackle. Clinton Toopi had created the initial danger before Kevin Sinfield spotted a run from Jamie Jones-Buchanan from distance and fired a long pass out from dummy half. The second rower came steaming through and went over untouched between the posts. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 8-6.

Leeds then found themselves down to 12 men soon afterwards when Danny McGuire was sin binned for knocking the ball away as Hull tried to take a quick 20 metre restart although on a replay it seemed harsh on the Rhinos stand off.

However, the Rhinos defended stoutly and were able to keep their line intact whilst McGuire was off the field. However, within three minutes of his return Hull had increased their lead. On the last tackle, Horne split the Leeds defence with a kick from close range and Briscoe raced onto it to score. Tickle added the conversion to make the score 14-6 at half time.

Leeds were their own worst enemy at the start of the second half. The Rhinos had to defend their line against back to back sets after Jones-Buchanan was trapped in goal and then Ablett knocked on trying to dive onto a loose ball.
The error strewn start to the half continued for Leeds with Tansey and Webb also knocking on early in the set however the Rhinos defended as if their lives depended on it and they held out wave after wave of Hull pressure.

Eventually Hull elected to go for a penalty after 64 minutes when Webb was penalised for a high tackle 45 metres out. Tickle's kick just got over the bar to make it 16-6 to the home side.

The Rhinos finally sparked into life on attack with ten minutes remaining. Clinton Toopi made a great break from inside his own half before feeding Jordan Tansey on half way who raced downfield. The youngster was chased by Sing but had the presence of mind to cut back inside and look for his support and Webb was on hand to score his 15th try of the season. Rob Burrow added the conversion.

Leeds then camped themselves on the Hull line for the remainder of the game but they were unable to find a way through to score a winner due to some outstanding defence by the home side.
