The Rhinos lost to Huddersfield in their only other meeting at John Smith's Stadium in the Challenge Cup
Leeds and Huddersfield will come head to head in the Challenge Cup once again in the 2016 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup Sixth Round in a rivalry that dates back to the first meeting in 1902.

The Sixth Round meeting is  only the second time that the sides have faced each other at the John Smith's Stadium in the Challenge Cup after the Giants won the only previous meeting in 2013.

There have been 18 previous Cup meetings between the sides dating back to the first meeting in 1902 with Huddersfield holding the advantage 10-8 at present. Leeds have only won twice at Huddersfield in the Cup. Back in 1944 in the second leg of the Round 2 clash, Leeds won 14-8 and went through on aggregate 16-15, then in 1976 Leeds ran out 34-10 winners at Fartown with Phil Cookson leading the way with two tries.

Other than the one meeting between the Rhinos and Giants at John Smith's Stadium, the stadium has been a happy hunting ground for Leeds in the Challenge Cup down the years. Leeds have played nine Challenge Cup semi finals at the stadium since 1996 and won six of them, losing on the first two visits in 1996 and 1997 to Bradford Bulls and suffering defeat to St Helens in 2008.

Huddersfield Giants 36 Leeds Rhinos 22

6th May 2016

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos two year hold on the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup was lost at the same venue where they suffered their last defeat in the competition as they suffered a 36-22 loss to Huddersfield Giants.

The two sides returned to do battle again having met seven days earlier with the home side taking the spoils on that occasion. However, it was the Rhinos who seized the initiative in this encounter with a try inside the opening minute. Jordan Lilley created the score with a sensational show and go to break through the Giants cover. He found Brett Ferres who put Jimmy Keinhorst over for the try. Lilley added the conversion to give his side a perfect start at 6-0.

The Giants however were always going to come back strongly and they equalised after 15 minutes when Keinhorst was penalised after a vital tackle. The Giants moved the ball in field and Ukuma Taai came charging onto a short pass to power his way over. Brough added the conversion to make it 6-6.

The home side then took the lead with a counter attack that covered the full length of the field. Jamie Jones-Buchanan looked like he may cross for a try but spilled the ball stretching out for the line. Huddersfield did not hesitate and immediately went on the attack creating the chance for McGillvary to score in the corner. Brough added the conversion.

Paul Anderson’s men then repeated the effort for good measure to extend their lead as half time approached. This time Brett Ferres looked certain to score but had the ball taken from his grasp as he crossed the line, the Giants immediately attacked and Ryan Brierley evaded Zak Hardaker to score in the corner. As Brough kicked the conversion, Ferres found himself in the sin bin for dissent and the Rhinos were trailing 18-6.  The Giants then added a drop goal through Jake Connor with the final play of the half to give them a strong lead.

The Rhinos gave themselves a lifeline after eight minutes of the second half when Liam Sutcliffe produced a great show of strength to spin out of the tackle and touch the ball down. Lilley added the conversion to put the game right back in the balance at 19-12.

However, just as Leeds returned to 13 men, the Giants crossed again through Kyle Wood, converted by Brough to make it 25-12.

Leeds once again came back as Jones-Buchanan and Cuthbertson combined to break up field before the latter threw a wide pass to Keinhorst to score his second try of the game. Lilley narrowly missed the conversion attempt.

However, Huddersfield took the game away from the visitors with a penalty and a converted try from Danny Brough. The Scottish international then kicked three drop goals to wind down the clock and late converted try from Mullally was not enough for the Rhinos.
