Huddersfield Giants 12 Leeds Rhinos 28

24th March 2017

By Leeds Rhinos

Tries from Tom Briscoe, Ryan Hall, Carl Ablett, Matt Parcell and Jordan Baldwinson helped seal a 28-12 win for Leeds at he John Smith’s Stadium.

Huddersfield have enjoyed their nights against the Rhinos in recent times and they will have gone into this game full of confidence having ended Wigan’s 100% start to the season five days earlier.

However it was Leeds who seized the early advantage.  The chance was created by a clever last play option from Joel Moon that earned a repeat set. Leeds kept the pressure on and Tom Briscoe crossed in the corner. Ashton Golding narrowly missed from the touchline with his conversion attempt.

The lead was doubled after 12 minutes when Leeds kept the ball alive to get the Giants back peddling and Brett Ferres then put in a great kick off the outside of his boot for Ryan Hall to chase round and touch down. Golding did convert from wide out this time to give his side a 10-0.

The Giants responded after that and hit back with two quick tries. The first was from Ukuma Ta’ai after he took an offload near the line and then Jermaine McGillvary found himself in space on the touchline to dive over. Danny Brough converted both to put his side 12-10 in front.

The Rhinos needed to find a response and they did through Carl Ablett. The second rower picked up a loose pass before breaking for the line and sliding over in the wet conditions for the try. Golding missed the conversion attempt.

The lead was increased just before the break when Matt Parcell was fastest to react to Ablett’s kick when Huddersfield failed to clear it and the hooker dived on the loose ball to make it three tries in three games. Golding hit the post wit his conversion attempt to leave the score at 18-12 at the interval.

The second half was more of slog for both teams as they were guilty of spilling too much ball. Leeds will have been pleased with their defence after allowing the Giants to dominate the third quarter of the game with errors. The main talking point of that period of the game was the double sin binned of Danny Brough and Carl Ablett when the Leeds man had little option but to defend himself as the Scottish skipper produce a volley of punches at the play the ball.

Leeds opted to cool things down with two penalties, the first from Golding and the second from Sutcliffe, who replaced the full back after he was injured.

The Rhinos finished with a flourish with a first try from Jordan Baldwinson with the final play of the game, converted by Sutcliffe.
