Huddersfield Giants 12 Leeds Rhinos 25

17th June 2007

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos had to fight hard for the points at Huddersfield and were grateful to two late tries from Jordan Tansey and Scott Donald to wrap up the points in a 25-12 win.

The sides had been locked on 12-12 for the majority of the second half but some great defence from the visitors was rewarded with a late flurry of points including a drop goal from Kevin Sinfield to secure the two league points.

Leeds put pressure on the home side from the off and scored inside two minutes. Ryan Bailey charged down a kick to pin the Giants in their own ten metre area and then Paul Reilly threw out a speculative off load under pressure from Jamie Peacock. Jamie Jones-Buchanan latched onto the loose ball and the Rhinos moved the ball to the right before Danny McGuire glided round the defence out wide to score. Sinfield's conversion hit the post before bouncing away but Leeds led 4-0.

The lead was doubled a minute later when Rob Burrow kicked ahead and McGuire beat Robbie Paul to the bouncing ball. McGuire kicked ahead and beat Reilly to pick up and score. Sinfield did add the conversion this time to make it 10-0.

Huddersfield hit back after nine minutes following their first spell of pressure when Hudson kicked ahead for prop Paul Jackson to touch down. Brad Drew added the conversion to make it 10-6.

Leeds continued to press Huddersfield on defence and they got their reward after 19 minutes. The Giants were penned inside their own quarter after great defence from the Rhinos and eventually the frustration led to an error with an incorrect play the ball being penalised. Sinfield elected to kick and extended the Rhinos lead to 12-6.

The Rhinos were then forced to defend their own line and it took two brave pieces of defending by Jordan Tansey, Danny McGuire and then Scott Donald to keep the home side out before half time.

Huddersfield struck first in the second half. Leeds appeared to be harshly penalised when a Huddersfield player appeared to knock on on their on 20 metre line but eventually referee Ashley Klein adjudged Jamie Jones-Buchanan had stolen possession. Eventually the pressure told and Chris Nero made the extra man out wide to score. Drew added the conversion to level the score after 49 minutes.

Kevin Sinfield and then Brad Drew both had chances to give their side the lead from penalties but both kickers pushed their attempts wide. It was a bruising encounter for both teams as neither side was prepared to give an inch going into the closing stages.

With nine minutes remaining Drew attempted a drop goal from 24 metres out but his pull his attempt wide to the left of the posts.

However, with four minutes remaining Leeds worked themselves into good field position and Sinfield kicked a drop goal from nearly 40 metres out.

The win was confirmed for Leeds with three minutes left when Jordan Tansey was quickest to react to a kick through by McGuire to touch down between the posts. Sinfield added the conversion and then from the re-start Robbie Paul knocked on and with 80 minutes showing on the scoreboard clock, Sinfield tried an audacious move from the base of the scrum. Picking the ball up at loose forward he kicked ahead for Scott Donald to chase, he out stripped Aspinall and raced through to score. Sinfield added the conversion to secure a 25-12 for Leeds.
