Gateshead Thunder 14 Leeds Rhinos 24

7th March 1999

By Leeds Rhinos

It was an historic night in Gateshead as the Super League new boys did battle with the Rhinos.

Shaun McRae's Aussies gave Leeds a big scare in this first round of Super League iv.

WP – Home MPU

In desperate conditions with a strong wind and driving rain on a boggy pitch, this match was never going to be a classic, but both sides battled hard in a dour struggle.

The final-score was no real reflection of the game and the Rhinos had to thank dubious officiating for two of their tries, which seemed to contain forward passes.

However, it was the Rhinos who were quicker to master the conditions and forged into 14-0 lead thanks to three good kicks from Iestyn Harris and two tries.

Harris appeared to have unloaded a forward pass to Marc Glanville as the Rhinos' Aussie backed the skipper up to gain a disputed first try.

There was little wrong with the Rhinos second.

Harris and the evergreen Darryl Powell combined before Harris dummied his way over past three defenders before breaching the line.

The Thunder hit back prior to the break when a long ball designed more to relieve pressure than anything else, was fumbled in the back field by Leroy Rivett.

Matt Daylight hammered the winger without the ball to give him little chance to respond before Tony Grimaldi put Craig Simon in for a historic first Super League try for the home team.

In the second period Simon darted in for a second try of the evening and the travelling Leeds support could have been forgiven for contemplating a first defeat of the season.

Thunder's kicker Ian Herron hit the woodwork twice, fortunately enough for Leeds, otherwise the game would have been a good deal closer.

Leeds third try settled the nerves, although the key pass again looked suspiciously forward, Powell receiving gratefully from Harris before crossing the whitewash.

A fourth try settled the affair and Francis Cummins did remarkably well to spin out of two tackles before coming inside and diving over the line, but in the intervening time Matt Daylight had out-jumped Rivett for a high ball to score the third of Gateshead's tries.
