Catalans Dragons 24 Leeds Rhinos 34

5th April 2010

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos needed a late Danny McGuire try to seal a 34-24 win over Catalans Dragons.

The Rhinos appeared to be coasting to victory just before half time when they lead 26-6 however Catalans fought back with four tries to make it 28-24 and threatened to snatch the win like last season however McGuire'[s effort finally killed off the Dragons.

Leeds Rhinos travelled to the South of France for their second game of the Easter period as they look to climb up the Engage Super League table.

The Rhinos snatched a 20-20 draw with Bradford four days earlier whilst Catalans had one less days preparation after being beaten at Huddersfield.

Brian McClennan used the return of Carl Ablett from an ankle injury to shuffle his pack around. Ablett started at loose forward with Kevin Sinfield going to stand off and Danny McGuire starting at scrum half.

The Rhinos were forced to defend their line for most of the opening five minutes and eventually the pressure told. Thomas Bosc made the original in road with a break on half way before chipping to the corner. Only a last ditch tackle by McGuire prevented Frederic Vaccari from scoring. Ryan Hall then caught a cross field kick on the last tackle but a forward pass from Matt Diskin to Lee Smith saw possession switch immediately back to Catalans. The Dragons then gained three penalties on the Leeds line and from the last Jerome Guisset powered his way over Kevin Sinfield to score. The decision was referred to video referee Stuart Cummings and despite replays showing he appeared to lose control of the ball, the try was awarded. Bosc added the conversion to make it 6-0 after as many minutes.

Leeds needed to respond quickly and they did just that. A high bomb from McGuire was allowed to bounce by the Catalans defenders and Ali Lauitiiti raced in to claim the bouncing ball. He passed to Kylie Leuluai but had the presence of mind to continue to run around the prop and took a return pass to go over for the try after seven minutes.

The Rhinos then took the lead for the first time on 14 minutes when Jamie Jones-Buchanan crashed over following a short pass by Sinfield. The skipper converted both tries to make it 12-6.

The visitors seemed to be in their stride now and they soon got their third try. The position came from a penalty when Catalans dragged Lee Smith into touch and from deep in the home half, the ball was moved quickly along the line with Lauitiiti giving the last pass to Senior to score. Sinfield was off target with the conversion attempt but the Rhinos led by ten.

It got better for Leeds after 19 minutes. The Rhinos were playing with confidence with Lee Smith, Brent Webb and Ryan Hall looking to attack from deep. Webb released Senior 40 metres from his own line and the centre passed back inside to McGuire to go 40 metres and score. Sinfield added the conversion to make it 22-6.

Leeds continued to press hard but had to wait until the 35th minute for their next try. The Rhinos were playing with great pace and a flowing move caught Catalans flat footed. McGuire spotted a two man overlap outwide and put in a grubber kick to the corner which Delaney gathered to score. Sinfield was off target with the conversion attempt but Leeds now led 26-6.

However, there was a blot on the copy book at the end of the half. Matt Diskin knocked on picking up a ball one handed at the ruck and from the next set Catalans loose forward Dallas Johnson managed to get over the line and score. Bosc added the conversion to make it 26-12 at half time.

The Rhinos were denied a try at the start of the second half when Stuart Cummings adjudged that Ian Kirke did not have control of the ball after he chased through to touch down a through kick.

Leeds were dealt a blow after 55 minutes when Kylie Leuluai was sent to the sin bin following a late hit on Thomas Bosc. From the ensuing set Catalans crossed for their third try when Julien Touxagas managed to get around the outside of Lee Smith to score in the corner. Bosc added a great conversion to make it 26-18.

Kevin Sinfield looked to settle any nerves his side may have been having with a penalty after 58 minutes after Catalans had been caught offside on their own line.

Despite having a ten point lead, Leeds were under immense pressure from the home side who sensed a remarkable come back. Several times they broke the Rhinos line but desperate defence kept them at bay.

However, having defended so well it was an error that cost the Rhinos. Thomas Bosc put in a grubber kick to the in goal which Kevin Sinfield hoped would run dead but whilst he allowed the ball to roll, he did not notice Kane Bentley racing up behind him to dive on the ball. Bosc added the conversion to make it 28-24 after 69 minutes and set up a tense finale.

Leeds needed something special to seal the game and it game with three minutes remaining. Ali Lauitiiti offloaded to Sinfield, who in turn produced a great offload to release McGuire on half way. McGuire raced up field and just avoided the attempted tackle by Steven Bell to score. Sinfield added the conversion to make the final score 34-24.
