Catalan Dragons 12 Leeds Rhinos 40

28th February 2014

By Leeds Rhinos

Two tries from Ryan Hall and Tom Briscoe’s fifth in three games for the Rhinos along with a man of the match performance from Kevin Sinfield helped secure victory in Perpignan.

The Rhinos faced a determined Catalan outfit, who were playing their first home game of the season and were on the end of a big defeat the previous week at Castleford. Their determination was obvious from the kick off as they overcame the loss of centre Daryl Millard in the warm up to take an early lead. Leeds were penalised just inside the Dragons half and from the following set, Danny McGuire attempted an interception but could only juggle the wet ball and the home side were awarded a scrum. From the set piece they worked a short side move that caught the Rhinos out and winger Michael Oldfield, who had played against Leeds for Manly in the 2012 World Club Challenge, galloped down the wing to score. William Barthau added the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead.

After a great chance for Ryan Hall went begging, the winger more than made up for it after 23 minutes when he had the vision to take a pass from Joel Moon and offload back to his centre to send him away down the touchline to score. Kevin Sinfield added the touchline conversion in the swirling wind to level the score.

It was not long before the visitors hit the front. Paul Aiton through a dummy pass from acting half before switching play back the opposite direction to find Brett Delaney, who crashed over. It was a well deserved try for the forward after his pass had set the move up for Hall and Moon for the first try. Sinfield was again on target to double the lead.

Leeds had to weather some strong attack from the home side after that but once again they were clinical on attack. Kallum Watkins, who is in sensational form at present, drew in three defenders with a powerful run before offloading one handed behind the back of a Dragons defender to Tom Briscoe. He set off down the wing and evaded the attempted tap tackle by Mathias Pala to go in for his fifth try in three games since joining the Rhinos. Sinfield kept up his 100% record with the boot to make the half time score 18-6.

The Rhinos immediately looked to put the result beyond doubt at the start of the second and they effectively did that with two quick tries inside the opening ten minutes. The first came from Carl Ablett as he came onto a short pass from Rob Burrow and went through some weak defence from the home side to score.

Then Hall opened his account for the season as he took a great offload from Moon to get away in the corner and go over and score. That try took him level on 138 Super League tries with Kieron Cunningham in the all time try scorers list. Sinfield converted both tries to put his side into a commanding 30-6 lead.

The home side did hit back through Jean-Phillippe Baile, when he reacted quickest to a chip kick to the corner. Barthau added the conversion but that was as close as the home side would get to Leeds.

The Rhinos finished the game strongly and a superb team move that involved passes from seven players including Briscoe and McGuire who set up Sinfield for a well deserved try in a man of the match winning performance. He converted the score before earning a rest for the final thirteen minutes of the game to make it 14 points on the night and a perfect six goals from six attempts.

Leeds had a try for Briscoe denied with eight minutes to go as he was adjudged to have gone out of play following a long period of pressure but they did score a seventh try on the night when Hall went clear in tenth place in the all time list when Hardaker and Moon combined to put the winger in. Burrow missed the touchline conversion attempt from the touchline but Leeds had secured a comfortable 40-12 win.
