By Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos lost out to a last minute Jamie Ellis penalty after leading 12-10 in the final ten minutes of the game.

Jimmy Keinhorst was recalled to the side after scoring two tries for Hunslet on his debut seven days earlier. He replaced winger Joe Vickery who was ruled out for six weeks with an ankle ligament injury.

Leeds Rhinos were expecting a tough challenge from Castleford and they got just that from the kick off as the Tigers raised their performance for the local derby and looked to get off to a strong start.

They had chances early on but pressure from Leeds on defence forced errors however they took advantage of a tough call against the visitors to open the scoring. Michael Shenton had appeared to lose the ball in the tackle but referee Tim Roby adjudged Leeds had stolen the ball in the tackle and gave the home team a penalty. Two tackles later, Rangi Chase put in a grubber kick that Jordan Tansey was quickest to react to and race through to touch down against his former club. Jamie Ellis added the conversion to make it 6-0.

Leeds were dealt a blow when Brett Delaney had to leave the field soon after but they got themselves back in the game with Danny McGuire and Zak Hardaker work a move down the left hand side before the full back put McGuire in for the try. Sinfield added the conversion to level the score.

The game was a scrappy affair in the wet and mud and errors were always going to prove costly. Castleford were quickest to react to a spilled ball from Leeds 30 metre from the visitors line. Rangi Chase picked up and stepped towards the corner around Chris Clarkson’s despairing dive. He then threw a no look pass inside to Jake Webster to score on his home debut. Ellis missed the conversion attempt but his side now led 10-6.

Both teams had chances in the remainder of the first half but all too often both teams fell victim to the wet and slippery conditions.

Leeds started the second half in brighter fashion and found themselves with a man advantage when Massey was sin binned following four quick penalties against the homeside. The Rhinos immediately struck when Ryan Hall was given a one on one chance in the corner and he powered his way over. Sinfield kicked the touchline conversion to edge his side in  front but with a long way to go in the game.

The Rhinos had a chance when Rob Burrow touched down a spilled pass near the try line but the referee adjudged it had gone forward.

Castleford sensed their chance to cause an upset and put the Rhinos under pressure with some strong defence. Ellis missed a chance to level the game with a penalty chance but he made no mistake with three minutes to go.

Leeds were then penalised in the final minute for not being square at the play the ball in front of the posts and Ellis kicked the simple penalty to secure the win for his side.
