Leeds Rhinos 6 Wakefield Trinity Wildcats 14

26th December 2015

By Leeds Rhinos

The Rhinos lost out 14-6 to Wakefield in the Wetherby Whaler Festive Challenge with a second half effort from Carl Ablett the home side’s only try.

The Champions returned to action on Boxing Day in the Wetherby Whaler Festive Challenge but it was Brian Smith's Wakefield Trinity Wildcats outfit that ran out the winners with a try in each half.

The wet conditions played a major part in the early exchanges of the game as both teams look to control the ball and territory in the greasy conditions. Beau Falloon will remember his introduction to life as a Rhino after he was rocked making a big hit on Scott Anderson. He was taken off to be assessed and returned ten minutes later showing no ill effects of the collision. However, he was forced off in the second half after taking a second blow.

It was the visitors who struck first when Liam Finn carved open a gap for loose forward Michael Sio who offloaded to Anthony England who scored between the posts. Finn kicked the conversion to give his side a 6-0 lead after 16 minutes.

Brad Singleton was in impressive form on attack and defence whilst Ashton Golding continued his growing reputation with some quick thinking and superb pace. He created the Rhinos best chance of the half when he took Jordan Tansey’s kick over the top, ducked under a tackle and broke up field. Mitch Achurch burst through in support before offloading to Ash Handley. Tom Johnstone desperately tried to stop the Rhinos momentum and found himself in the sin bin for his efforts.

Leeds had a try disallowed for Falloon soon after when referee Richard Silverwood spotted a knock on in the build up before the hooker dived over and it remained 6-0 at half time to the visitors.

The second half remained a battle as both teams looked to find a way through. Mitch Garbutt led the charge for the home side with a big spell after the break however it was Wakefied who extended their lead next.

Tansey opted to kick for goal from a penalty 15m out having taken a tap at a previous infringement before McGuire failed to deal with a grubber kick to the in goal and Anderson was quickest to react to touch down. Tansey added the conversion to give his side a 14-0 with 22 minutes to go.

Leeds did get a score back with 15 minutes to go when Carl Ablett supported the break of Rob Burrow to take the offload and go round to score. Lilley, who was impressive again with his leadership of the team, adding the conversion.

The Rhinos battled hard in the closing stages to try and cut the gap even further including a sensational break by Golding supported by Lilley and Handley but credit must go to Wakefield who remained resolute and kept them out.
