It was with much regret that the club learned of the death this week of former player and backroom staff Alan Horsfall. Horsfall played for Leeds immediately after the Second World War, making his debut in the winter of 1945. His debut came against Wigan at Headingley on 24th November as Leeds suffered a 32-17 defeat in a disappointing season. He scored his first try for the club away at Hull on 2nd May 1946 in the penultimate game of the season. He played at prop for Leeds against Barrow in the epic Challenge Cup semi final of 1951 when Barrow snatched a draw in the first game with a late penalty before running out easy 28-13 winners in the replay four days later at Fartown. He was an outstanding servant to the Leeds club and only left Leeds on 10th January 1955 when he was included in a part exchange deal with neighbours Castleford that saw prop Joe Anderson arrive at Headingley. In total, Horsfall made 77 appearances for Leeds in nearly ten years at the club scoring seven tries. His time spanned two eras at the club with the hardships of the post-war period followed by the beginnings of a golden age with the arrival of Lewis Jones. His attitude on the pitch as a hard working, no-nonsense player was matched by his commitment off the field in retirement. For many years he was involved with the Leeds club as bag man for the Leeds teams of the 1970s and early 1980s. His funeral will take place on Wednesday 6th June at the Lawnswood Cemetery and Crematorium at 3pm.
