School Girls Rugby League - School Profiles

Carr Manor

This is now the third year Girls Rugby has been a regular activity in PE curriculum and extra curricular time at Carr Manor High Specialist Sports College. It attracts girls who enjoy the competitive side of participating in all types of games activities but has also attracted girls who do not usually take part in 'traditional girls' sports.

As a result the teamwork between different members of the school community has greatly improved and the girls have made friends with others they would not normally mix with.

Girls' rugby has also enabled different pupils to be recognised and nominated to receive awards at our Sports presentation evenings, adding another dimension to girls sport.

The development of the Girls Rugby League has been a great success at Carr Manor and thoroughly enjoyed by many.

Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi Catholic College is an inner-city school in East Leeds. Girl's rugby was launched at the beginning of this academic year and has really taken off as an extra-curricular activity. At the first training session in September 5 girls attended and thoroughly enjoyed learning new skills and playing games in a new sport. Now we have over 20 girls training every week from years 7-10 and this number is still on the rise. Our training sessions are based on enjoyment and having fun whilst also learning the skills and rules to play rugby. All the girls are very committed and are looking forward to playing games against other schools, having fun and scoring tries! Our link with East Leeds ARLFC through Pete Longbottom, who kindly provided a kit for us to play in, has really helped girl's rugby progress at Corpus. There are also plans in place to introduce girl's rugby into the P.E curriculum and host inter-form tag rugby festivals next summer to expose as many girls as possible to rugby in a safe and fun environment. All the girls are excited by these developments and can't wait to get started.

Parklands participated in the U13's league last year and it proved very successful and created interest amongst girls who hadn't really shown an interest in sport before. The Year 7 girls who have now moved into Year 8 are looking forward to continuing in the league this year along with some new Year 7 girls who are looking forward to the competition!! The girls who have moved into Year 9 are keen to continue playing Rugby and will participate in the U15's league. Two of these Year 9 girls have started to train at Whinmoor Warriors, our local club, along with a pupil in Year 10 who developed an interest in Rugby after attending the Touch Rugby Development Day. Girls in Year 11 have a team who attended festivals last year and are keen to have the opportunity to play again this year. Two of these Year 11 girls acted as mentors to the U13's team, helping them with training and at matches. The girls will continue this role this year. Parklands had lots of achievements last year with both their Year 7 and Year 8 teams coming 2nd in the Leeds qualifiers for the Carnegie Championships Schools and therefore went to the Yorkshire rounds in Dewsbury, where they had a great time and held their own against other much more experienced schools. Finally the Year 7 team also came 1st in the War of the Roses festival in December 08 meaning they went to Wigan to play an equivalent team, the final score was 8 - 5 to Holy Cross but the girls had a fantastic day that included a tour around the Wigan stadium and they watched the Wigan v Rhinos match and paraded around the pitch at half time. The U13's team also had the opportunity to play in a half time mini game at the Rhinos v Wildcats game. The girls also enjoyed a brilliant day training with and meeting the Manly Sea Eagles - a day they will never forget!!!
The U13's team for 2009/10 is currently as follows:
Kelly Hamilton
Chloe McArdle
Karen Mapisa
Colby Turner
Miranda Nyamunda
Gemma McDermott
Becky Bleasby
Hannah Hill
Jade Parle
Abi Ward

Farnley

Farnley Park is a very small unheard of school in West Leeds, but size means nothing. Last season our girls' rugby team came second in the league and went to Headingley Carnegie Stadium to play in a curtain raiser for the Leeds Rhinos vs Huddersfield Super League game. We faced South Leeds in the Grand Final and put up a great fight. Even though we lost the girls showed massive improvement from the beginning of the season and their is high hopes for their 2009-2010 campaign.

Rodillian

Rodillian school has always had strong boys Rugby League teams, but now it is the girls turn to prove how good they are! A new girls Rugby League club has now started at Rodillian every Wednesday after school. Following a tag Rugby tournament led by Laura Clarke, the pupils have shown a keen interest with up to 20 girls attending each session. Although the girls are still learning they are keen to get stuck into their first match that sadly got cancelled. All players have increased in confidence during this half term and are looking forward to playing their first match next half term.
